Asbestos Compensation

Asbestos compensation is usually provided for the disease called mesothelioma but might be for other negative effects from the chemical. Mesothelioma is a relatively uncommon form of cancer which is most often caused by exposure to the chemical.

Blue asbestos is more likely to cause Mesothelioma than white asbestos because of the long thin fibers in blue asbestos. However it has been found to be the case that smaller particles of asbestos can be more dangerous than larger ones due to the fact that smaller particles can remain in the air for longer periods.

Asbestos can also cause other diseases as well as Mesothelioma, including cancers of the lungs and kidneys as well as other forms of lung disease. Asbestos has been recognized as a health risk since about 1900, but Mesothelioma has only been officially linked to the chemical since 1960.

Some people only briefly exposed to small amounts of asbestos develop Mesothelioma while others exposed to large amounts of asbestos over long periods, do not. One study found incidence of Mesothelioma to be over three hundred times as great in workers with asbestos insulation, compared to the general population.

Asbestos can cause the DNA of cells to change or even increase the likelihood that foreign DNA will get inside a cell ad effect it. Asbestos might also decrease the effectiveness of the immune system.

Mesothelioma currently has no reliable cure, although various treatments can increase the statistical lifespan of a patient with the disease. Such treatments include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, surgery and radiation treatment, and are typically more effective in combination than when used alone.

Asbestos compensation can be very large, sometimes totaling more than tens of millions of dollars. Many lawyers will take such a case on a “no win no fee basis” making it a much easier decision for a patient to begin legal action.
