Asbestos Related Illnesses Are Not Always Cancerous
It has been decades since it was generally acknowledged that asbestos related illnesses were found in anyone who came in contact with this damaging material. At one time it was a widely used in construction. Due to the presence of it in houses and buildings being remodeled, it still puts people at risk of developing health problems today.
An individual who suspects a disease resulting from exposure should see a doctor immediately. Have a full physical exam. It is a difficult path to discovering the mesotheliomas. If one is found, a surgical excision may be the best treatment. An mesiothelioma can be and epithelial cell type, mixed cell type or a fibrosarcomatous cell type. Epithelial has the best prognosis and mixed cell type has a slightly less favorable one. The fibrosarcomatous cell type is the most severe.
The doctor will do a complete physical exam first. He or she will look for fluid in the chest and abdominal cavities. The fluid may also be present in the pericardium (tissue surrounding the heart). Often the x-ray will show malignant mesothelioma or other conditions related to this damaging material.
The things that indicate disease are a thickened pleura, mineral deposits (calcification), and diminishing of the lung fissures. There may be fluid present in the pleural area (area near the lungs inside the chest cavity. The diagnosis of malignant mesothelioma is the determination that cancer is present.
There is a test called a CT scan that can reveal the exact location and size of the cancerous tumor. Some people refer to the CT scan as a CAT scan. Another useful test is the MRI. This test sometimes requires that a dye be injected into the body through a vein. The dye is harmless and can allow the physician to see the tumor.
Mesotheliomas are very hard to diagnose. Surgical removal of the tumor may be a viable treatment. If the mesothelioma is an epithelial cell type, there is a better prognosis. Mixed cell type is less favorable. The fibrosarcomatous cell type, unfortunately, has a poor prognosis.
It is not uncommon for an illness of this type to lie dormant for forty or even fifty years. The exposure can often be untraceable due to the length of time it takes to fulminate into symptomatology. There is a non-cancerous disease, asbestosis. It causes a build up of scar tissue that affects the lungs.
The symptoms of asbestosis are pain in the chest area, difficult breathing, coughing and shortness of breath. A malignant mesothelioma will have all these signs plus others. The others include, nausea, bowel obstruction, difficult breathing, anemia and weight loss. Cancerous or not, any asbestos related disease is a very serious condition. It may how up after four or five decades have passed.
Avoiding exposure to any asbestos is crucial to maintaining good health. When remodeling projects are undertaken in any older building, workers must wear protective masks. Tiny particles are airborne when this dangerous material is removed.
When a person has breathing problems and severe pain in the chest, it may be caused by pleural plaques. These are bilateral (bilateral refers to the fact they are on both sides of the body)sections of fibrosis. This condition shows up after ten years. Occasionally pleural plaques happen to someone who has never been exposed.
Since research continues, you can keep up with the latest news and ways the conditions are being treated. Online sources will provide the updates. New methods of treatment are being developed for asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma. Most provide palliative care.
Treatment for asbestos related illnesses should begin promptly. There is a nationwide listing of physicians and hospitals that specialize in asbestosis and mesothelioma. Financial help is available to sufferers of asbestos related illnesses.
