Mesothelioma Clinical Trial

A mesothelioma clinical trial is where a new treatment for the disease is tried. These can be important treatment options for many patients.

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer for which the main cause is exposure to asbestos. The symptoms might not appear for many decades after the exposure, and the amount and length of the exposure has little correlation with how likely a person is to develop this disease. Mesothelioma is difficult to diagnose until the late stages, because most of the symptoms can also be the result of other conditions.

Different trials are suitable for different patients, and each trial might only be taking place at one place in the country, so travel is usually necessary. Even for standard treatment the variety of treatments available are usually more extensive at specialist centers compared to ones local medical facility. Travel expenses concerned with mesothelioma are one of the categories of expenses which can be legally claimed for.

Some trails might only take patients who have not yet had any treatment for the disease, but other trials might only take patients for which other treatments have already failed. Some might be randomized so that some patients receive the new treatment and some patients receive the standard treatment. Placebos which are where some participants receive no active treatment, to compare results, are rarely used in cancer trials.

Some types of trials might not be covered by particular medical insurance policies so be sure to check all relevant details before making a choice.

The US government has a web-page dedicated to cancer clinical trials which can be found at http://www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials. Patients in other countries can usually find relevant information online, or even travel to other countries for treatment in some cases.

A mesothelioma clinical trial can be a valuable option for some patients, but all the details need to be checked carefully before agreeing.
