Mesothilioma

Mesothilioma is an alternative spelling of “mesothelioma” which is a relatively rare cancer usually caused by exposure to asbestos. There is no reliable cure for the disease at present.

For many decades it has been known that asbestos causes mesothelioma among other medical problems. Since contact with the substance is usually caused by working conditions and failure by an employer to provide adequate safety features, there are many legal proceedings about this disease. Some of the claims awarded can be tens of millions of dollars.

Diagnosis of the disease is very difficult until the late stages because all the obvious symptoms can be caused by other less severe medical issues. Screening would help, but there is no generally accepted reliable screening method yet. A diagnosis is usually confirmed by a biopsy of affected tissue, among other tests.

Prognosis for mesothelioma is usually bad and because of the difficulty in diagnosing the disease accurately until the late stages, most patients die within 18 months of receiving a definite diagnosis.

Treatments are available and include chemo-therapy, immunotherapy, chemo treatment and sometimes surgery or even radical surgery. Treatments can often work better in combination than alone, and an additional option is clinical trials.

Due to the large claims often awarded, many specialist legal representatives will take a case on a “no win no fee” basis as they will take their fees out of any winnings. As well as claming for the disease itself, a patient can also claim for necessary travel expenses and equipment. Since mesothelioma specialists are often only available in certain areas, travel is often advised in order to get the very best specialist help.

Litigation can be complex because the symptoms have a very long latency period, sometimes up to 50 years, so many of the employers involved have gone out of business for one reason or another, or been made bankrupt by previous mesothelioma claims.

Mesothilioma is a cancer without a cure, usually caused by an employers negligence.
